SRC-133
Nonlinear resonant instability of a plasma in the field of an ordinary electromagnetic wave. Sov. Phys.-JETP 42(1), 91-97. Russian original Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 69, 176-188
Published claims resting on this source
- CLM-0114 The Russian treatment says self-focusing is triggered by lumpiness already present in the ionosphere, not by beam power crossing a line. That lumpiness is almost always there, so in practice the threshold nearly always is met.
- CLM-0115 The Russian and American researchers were talking to each other from at least 1974, so they are not two fully independent traditions.
- CLM-0116 The Russian formulas are a different shape from the 0.43 relation, so they cannot be used to check it either way.
- CLM-0146 A 1975 Soviet theory paper calculated an exact minimum radio-wave strength - about 300 millivolts per metre in daytime, ten times less at night - below which a specific kind of upper-atmosphere plasma instability simply does not start.
