In plain terms
The patent describes measuring the incoming steering signal at scattered sensors, not at every antenna, and working out the values in between. The patent does not say how far apart those sensors are, which is the number that decides whether the method works.
The claim as recorded
GB2563574 discloses that per-element transmit phase is obtained by sampling the pilot wavefront at "a plurality of detectors 334 dispersed amongst the array - each fixed relative to at least one element", and states that "Interpolation over short distances may be used to reduce the number of phase sampling receivers". Phase is therefore NOT measured at every element, and the phase applied to an element between detectors is interpolated. The document states no detector count, no detector spacing, no interpolation scheme and no residual error budget anywhere in its 32 internal pages or its 51 claims.
Evidence behind this: A UK patent application as published (GB 2563574 A, filed 5 June 2017, published 26 December 2018), read directly. The patent was granted as GB 2563574 B, published 4 August 2021, and its claims were read too. T3 because it is a published document with a named applicant and a searched disclosure (the Section 17 search report is bound in), and not T2 because a patent teaches an invention rather than reporting a result.
Scope and limits
A UK patent application, filed in 2017 and published in 2018, and the patent granted on it, whose B specification was published in 2021. A patent teaches an invention and is not an implementation record. It states what MAY be done, in the permissive register patents use throughout, so this records a disclosed method and its stated gaps rather than what any built system does. Nothing here is evidence about Space Solar's current design.
What it assumes
No assumptions are recorded against this claim.
Where it comes from
internal p21, PDF p33, lines 4-12. The passage first links the system-wide reference to a synchronised timing reference for per-element relative phase (paraphrased), then, verbatim: "This may comprise a plurality of detectors 334 dispersed amongst the array - each fixed relative to at least one element 302, which sample the phase of the spherical wavefront associated with a distant pilot beam source emanating from the target with receivers interspersed amongst the array." It adds that the pilot may be at a different frequency from the power beam (paraphrased), then, verbatim: "These phase samples are subsequently time-reversed before being applied as the relative phase for each element 302. Interpolation over short distances may be used to reduce the number of phase sampling receivers." The absences were established by reading the complete description (internal p1-22), all 51 claims (p23-30) and the Section 17 search report (p31-32). The granted patent (SRC-795, 2021, read from page images) prints the same passage on the same page and lines (internal p21, PDF p33, lines 4-12), and none of its 50 claims states a detector count or spacing.
