Energy Aperture

Value chain · CLM-0512

In plain terms

The small prototype achieved a beam strength close to what a real system would use, but only over an area the size of a small table, using about 672 watts of radio power.

The claim as recorded

The same 112-element array achieved a measured peak power density of 172 W/m2 against a 200 W/m2 design goal at 6.5m range against a 1m2 test rectenna, transmitting about 672W total RF power; the authors present this as representative of "power densities... representative of a space solar satellite scenario."

Scope and limits

Scale (1m2 aperture, ~672W transmitted RF) is about six and a half orders of magnitude below the CASSIOPeiA goal stated in the same paper, citing its ref [3], 2 GW transmitted from GEO by an aperture of about 2 km x 2 km (SRC-001 p.2): about 3 million times in power and 4 million times in aperture area; representativeness of power density at this scale does not establish representativeness of efficiency, mass, or beam coherence at full scale.

What it assumes

No assumptions are recorded against this claim.

Where it comes from

SRC-001 Design and Experimental Validation of a 112-Element Cross-Helix Array for Retrodirective...
p.2: "a peak measured power density of 172 W/m2". The same page states the design goal as 200 W/m2 over 6.5 m in an anechoic chamber, and the transmitted power as 672 W of RF with 6 W per element.

Basis: measured peak power density, W/m2, small-scale test
