SRC-132
Nonlinear effects in the ionosphere, Physics-Uspekhi (UFN) review.
Published claims resting on this source
- CLM-0114 The Russian treatment says self-focusing is triggered by lumpiness already present in the ionosphere, not by beam power crossing a line. That lumpiness is almost always there, so in practice the threshold nearly always is met.
- CLM-0116 The Russian formulas are a different shape from the 0.43 relation, so they cannot be used to check it either way.
- CLM-0147 A major 2007 physics review gives a different mathematical formula, with different dependence on temperature and frequency and no dependence at all on plasma density, for a related but distinct instability than the one usually used to set space solar power's safety threshold.
- CLM-0158 Neither of the two sources read at the page, a 2004 review by Robinson and others and Gurevich (2007), states the range of conditions under which this 1981 low-frequency theory is valid at the much higher microwave frequencies space solar power plans to use; the 2004 review applies a similar formula at 2.48 and 5.8 gigahertz without stating one.
