In plain terms
In this study the huge twisted surface is tiled with small six-sided panels, each about 0.6 to 1.1 metres across. Each panel is a little staircase of thin strips a few centimetres apart, with the antennas standing between the steps and solar cells on both faces of each strip, except near the centre where the strips would shade each other.
The claim as recorded
The 2022 thesis builds CASSIOPeiA's surface from tilted hexagonal modules, each a staircase of thin horizontal layers. Its element is a triple dipole "arranged in a triangle of side [lambda]/4 mm (12.9 mm)" at 5.8 GHz, with "One dipole is 14 mm in length". Layers have "a minimum vertical distance of 14 mm between them" and "each layer has a thickness of 5 mm". Fig. 2-17 draws a module side view as steps, labelled "14 mm", "23.56 mm" and "27.93 mm". Table 2-5 gives ten module types, from 40 layers at the rim to 22 at the axis, with a hexagon side of 552 to 302 mm and an area of 0.79 to 0.23 m2. The modules share a constant vertical height of 517 mm, and the three innermost types carry no PV.
Evidence behind this: A non-peer-reviewed MSc thesis, designer-guided. Its own module design, sized to a launcher fairing, not a flown or built module.
Scope and limits
THE THESIS'S OWN DESIGN FOR ITS 261.8 m VARIANT (CLM-1181), SIZED TO A 1.2 m LAUNCHER FAIRING, not a stated CASSIOPeiA standard. THE MODULE HEIGHT HAS A SUPERSEDED VALUE: PDF 33 first gives 0.67 m from the stowed dimension, then PDF 34 replaces it with 517 mm once the layer count sets Sdp (956 x sin 32.7 deg = 516.5, own arithmetic). Cite 517 mm. 27.93 mm IS MEASURED ALONG THE SLOPE: 23.56 / cos 32.5 deg = 27.94 (own arithmetic, 3d-02 recheck2 (d)). THE FIGURE IS NOT QUITE SELF-CONSISTENT: a 14 mm rise over 23.56 mm is 30.7 deg, not 32.5. Tread width is not stated; by figure scaling it is about 33 to 35 mm, good to about 10 per cent, and is not claimed here. "One dipole is 14 mm in length" is about lambda/4 at 5.8 GHz, not the lambda/2 of CLM-1176; it may mean one monopole arm, and the thesis does not say. Layer pitch from Eq. 2-6 (956 mm / (40 x 0.95) = 25.2 mm) does not match the figure's 27.93 mm; this is not resolved. Table 3-6 (PDF 42) swaps its module-count labels (114,843 labelled maximum, 394,458 minimum); counts are not claimed here. The inner-third PV-free zone is this design's; SRC-026 Fig. 6 shows about a quarter (CLM-1179).
What it assumes
That the thesis's labels on Fig. 2-17 give the geometry of every module; the figure shows one module at the rim tilt.
Where it comes from
PDF 27 [17], raw, transliterated: "each dipole is arranged in a triangle of side [lambda]/4 mm (12.9 mm) where [lambda] is the microwave wavelength and is equal to 51.7 mm at a frequency of 5.8 GHz"; "One dipole is 14 mm in length."; "the distance between the centroids of any two adjacent elements should always be [lambda/sqrt3] mm i.e., 29.84 mm"; "Each layer must have a minimum vertical distance of 14 mm between them due to the dimensions of" (continued on PDF 28) "dipoles. The dimensions of the layers depend on the module and each layer has a thickness of 5 mm." PDF 28 [18], raw: "these layers will also have PV elements on both sides". PDF 32 [22], Fig. 2-17 "Module Sideview", labels read at zoom 4: "14 mm" (rise between treads), "23.56 mm" (horizontal step), "27.93 mm" (along the slope). PDF 33 [23], raw: "This gives us a constant module vertical height of 0.67 m across the helicoid."; PDF 34 [24], raw: "This gives us a new constant height of 517 mm." Table 2-5 (PDF 34), raw: "No. of Layers 40 38 36 34 32 30 28 26 24 22 Sdp (mm) 956 903 858 811 769 713 664 612 563 523 ... PDF 34, raw: "the modules in the inner third radius of the helicoid will not have PV elements on them, and these would be the last three module types". PDF 43 [33], raw: "the modules in the stowed state will have a thickness of 5 mm".
