In plain terms
Nearly half of the grant money the UK government announced in 2023 and 2024 for its space-based solar power innovation competition was awarded to three projects named after the CASSIOPeiA design; none of the other six awards was tied to a named satellite design.
The claim as recorded
Of the UK Space Based Solar Power Innovation Competition's GBP 5,478,979 total announced award amounts (9 projects, 2022-2024), three awards totalling GBP 2,623,304 (CASSIE GBP 999,513; CASSiDI GBP 1,198,802; CASSIOPeiA Phase 0/A GBP 424,989) trace directly to the CASSIOPeiA/Ian Cash/Space Solar design lineage -- just under half (47.9%) of the whole competition's announced awards, and the largest identifiable slice behind any single design lineage.
Scope and limits
This is grant funding for component- and study-level R&D (TRL 1-6 at project start, per the competition notice, SRC-298), not funding for a full-scale demonstrator or an operational system; one of the three awards' recipients (Space Solar Engineering Ltd) is a named partner in the later RAF036/2425 study, and its other partner, Imperial College London, is named in the CASSIE project description and holds its own GBP 295,194 award (SRC-076 PDF p.2; SRC-297), so the three awards should be read as one converging design lineage receiving sustained support, not as three independent validations of merit. The figures are announced award amounts, not disbursement; DESNZ's final report gives the SBSP innovation programme's NZIP final spend as GBP 5.4 million (SRC-325 PDF p.59, printed p.57), a different quantity that must not be merged with this sum. The next page of the same report (SRC-325 PDF p.60, printed p.58) describes a GBP 5.5 million programme, GBP 3.3 million from the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio and GBP 2.2 million from the UK Space Agency, awarded to eight organisations; the two pages do not reconcile GBP 5.4 million of NZIP spend with GBP 3.3 million of NZIP funding.
What it assumes
No assumptions are recorded against this claim.
Where it comes from
, read whole: nine "Funding amount" entries summing to GBP 5,478,979; the three projects carry CASSIOPeiA in their own names, "CASSIOPeiA antenna with steering scaled indoor experiment (CASSIE)", "CASSIOPeiA commercial and concept phase 0/A (C3P0/A)" and "CASSIOPeiA design iteration (CASSiDI)". Own arithmetic: 999,513 + 424,989 + 1,198,802 = 2,623,304, which is 47.9% of 5,478,979.
Basis: GBP, nominal, announced grant award amounts (not spend)
