In plain terms

A 2007 physics paper builds on an earlier, different Perkins paper - not the one usually cited for space solar power's safety threshold - and points out what it says is a genuine mistake in a 1993 paper's mathematics.

The claim as recorded

Sodha, Sharma, Verma and Faisal (2007) present an independent theoretical treatment of ionospheric self-focusing/filamentation that positions itself as an improvement on Perkins and Valeo (1974) - not Perkins and Goldman (1981), which appears only in the paper's bibliography and is never discussed in the body text - explicitly criticising Perkins and Valeo (1974) for "ignoring the change in the temperature of the electrons on account of the main beam" (called "serious"), and identifying what it describes as an algebraic error in Ghanshyam and Tripathi's (1993) electron-temperature and energy-balance equations.

Scope and limits

This paper's own threshold condition is not reduced to a closed-form power-law threshold comparable to the 0.43 coefficient - it is expressed as dimensionless functions of background irradiance and wavenumber, with Ne and Te entering only through tabulated polynomial fits to one specific ionospheric model at one height (200 km). Does NOT provide numeric corroboration or contradiction of the 0.43 figure.

What it assumes

The reviewing report's reading of the paper's stated critiques (checked by full-text search confirming zero body-text engagement with Perkins and Goldman 1981 specifically) is accurate.

Where it comes from

SRC-272 Self-focusing instability in ionospheric plasma with thermal conduction., 2007
SRC-272 Self-focusing instability in ionospheric plasma with thermal conduction., 2007
The register records that the authors say that analysis "ignores the change in the temperature of the electrons on account of the main beam," calling this omission "serious". It also records Ghanshyam and Tripathi 1993, whom they say made an algebraic error in the electron temperature and energy-balance equations, their Eqs. 42/45.

Basis: none (theoretical critique)
