In plain terms

A Chinese government-linked design study calculated that, outside the main beam of its proposed satellite, stray sidelobe power on the ground would fall to about 22 watts and then 7.5 watts per square metre.

The claim as recorded

Hou et al.'s (2024/2025) CAST-led Modular Multirotary Joints SPS (MMR-SPS) concept paper reports simulated first- and second-sidelobe peak ground power densities of about 22 W/m2 and 7.5 W/m2 respectively at 5.8 GHz, for a main-lobe footprint of about 30 km x 300 m at 85% beam-collection efficiency, with a rectenna array sized 60 km x 800 m to raise collection efficiency further.

Scope and limits

A SIMULATED/PLANNED design figure, not measured or flown hardware. The main-lobe peak figure (~460 W/m2) from the same source is already recorded elsewhere and is deliberately not restated here.

What it assumes

The stated antenna-element geometry (5m x 5m elements, M=2000, N=20) and beamforming model are as described; this is a simulation, not built or flown hardware.

Hou et al. (IEEE TAES, 2024/2025), PDF p.8: "The first sidelobe zone and second sidelobe zone have the highest power densities of approximately 22 W/m2 and 7.5 W/m2, respectively. To achieve a higher BCE, the rectenna array on the ground is designed to cover an area of 60 km x 800 m."
