Solid State SPS Microwave Generation and Transmission Study, Volume I - Phase II Final Report -- NASA CR-3338; Contract NAS8-33157; 1980
Raytheon Company, Wayland, Massachusetts (Owen E. Maynard) ·1980 · T3 government or agency report · VC06
Commissioned by Marshall Space Flight Center, Contract NAS8-33157. Who paid for a study is recorded because it bears on how its conclusions should be read, not because it makes them wrong.

- CLM-1003 For a transmitter built from millions of small solid-state amplifiers instead of tubes, the 1980 study worked its noise budget down to the ground and found about 27 decibels of headroom against the limit it used; it also noted that for such a large array the second harmonic's grating lobes miss the earth altogether, so the worry moves to the third harmonic, and that a separate frequency allocation for harmonics might be needed.
- CLM-1050 The interference limit Raytheon measured its tubes against is given as a CCIR requirement but never traced to a CCIR document, and one page even gets its units wrong by a factor of a thousand.
