Why a record is not published

If you followed a link here, the record you were looking for exists but is not currently published. This page says what the checks are. It does not say which one that record failed, because the reason can itself be a statement about a source.

Every check must pass

A record is excluded unless it passes every one of the following checks.

Check The record is excluded when
Status It has been superseded, retracted or withdrawn.
Verification It has not been independently confirmed. What the verdicts mean.
Confidence Its confidence is LOW.
Approval It has not passed the gate that marks a record publishable.
Plain statement It has no plain-English form, or cannot be given one without losing its meaning.
Prohibition It is flagged as not to be quoted until corrected.
Source held The source document was never obtained, so a reader could not walk back to the page it came from.
Source identified The source is registered but not yet pinned down to a specific document.
Traceability It cites no registered source, or is own work citing no published calculation.
Vocabulary Any graded field holds a value outside the defined set, so a badge on the page could mislabel it.

What is never published, whatever the record says

When a published record stops passing

Today a record that stops passing loses its page, and its address shows not-found. That means the record was withdrawn or superseded, not that the citation was wrong.

Planned: what a withdrawn record's address will show.

What happened What the page shows afterwards
Superseded by a newer record The old text struck through, the date, and a link to what replaced it. The correction stays visible rather than being tidied away.
Retracted or withdrawn The identifier, the date and one sentence of reason. The withdrawn text is not shown.
Any other check now failing The identifier and one line saying it is not currently published, linking here.

Why the reason is not always given

Saying a record failed because its source could not be obtained, or because a verifier found it wrong, is a statement about a third party's document. Where that statement has not itself been checked and gated, publishing it would break the same rule the gate exists to enforce.
