In plain terms

Mice kept 16 hours a day for four days in fields around and above the design centre showed no sperm damage, though modest direct heating of the testes did cause it.

The claim as recorded

An unpublished abstract reports that male mice exposed unrestrained to 2450 MHz CW in an anechoic chamber for 16 hours a day for 4 days at average 20 and 32 mW/cm2 (200 and 320 W/m2), 70 mice per group, showed no change in sperm count or percent abnormal sperm up to 10 weeks later, while 2 hours of hindquarter immersion at 40 deg C clearly lowered counts and raised abnormal sperm. A second test of five mouse strains at an average 26 mW/cm2 for 2 or 16 hours found heat effects in all strains and microwave effects in none. No rise in testis temperature was detected.

Evidence behind this: T3, an unpublished abstract and summary; it permits "the abstract reports Y". 70 mice per group in experiment 1; 5 per cell in the strain table.

Scope and limits

ANIMAL, NOT HUMAN. Per-cage density varied with position; only averages are given. No SAR (the authors prefer testis temperature and E-field). Four days, not chronic. Sperm abnormality scoring incomplete for the strain test. 20-32 mW/cm2 = 200-320 W/m2, bracketing 230 W/m2. No authors or venue printed.

What it assumes

No assumptions are recorded against this claim.

Where it comes from

SRC-722 Further Studies of Testis Cytology in Mice Irradiated with 2450-MHz Microwaves (abstract,...
PDF p.1: protocol, 20 and 32 mW/cm2, 70 B6C3F1 mice per group, 26 mW/cm2 strain test; "none showed an effect of microwaves"; a 39 mW/cm2 reproductive test under way. PDF p.2: cages in the far field at 23 deg C, Holaday 1500 probe at each cage position, no testis temperature rise detected (paraphrase). PDF p.4: table of percent dark-stained cells and sperm counts, mean +/- SE, groups of 5.

Basis: mW/cm2 incident per cage position (probe), far field, CW; 16 h/day x 4 days, or 2 or 16 h
