In plain terms
Rabbits kept for six months in a field of about 70-100 W/m2, below the 1978 beam centre, showed no tissue damage and no clear blood changes. Their immune cells responded somewhat less to one stimulant in the test tube a month later. Four animals per group is too few to settle it.
The claim as recorded
Four rabbits exposed to 2450 MHz CW for 23 hours a day over 180 consecutive days (7 mW/cm2 at the body axis, 10 mW/cm2 at the head; peak head SAR 17 W/kg measured, maximum whole-body average 1.5 W/kg calculated) showed no lesions attributable to the exposure. Three of 41 blood parameters differed, which the authors note is close to the 2.05 expected by chance. Splenic lymphocytes from exposed animals, tested 30 days after exposure ended, responded significantly less to pokeweed mitogen at all three levels. The bone-marrow myeloid/erythroid ratio was higher (1.82 +/- 0.09 against 1.21 +/- 0.11). The authors read this as possible immunosuppression and state the results are not meant to be definitive.
Evidence behind this: T1-a refereed 1980 journal article (inferred from received and revised dates); four exposed and four sham animals.
Scope and limits
FOUR EXPOSED ANIMALS (THREE FOR ORGAN MASSES, TABLE 5, PDF p.5); NOT REPLICATED IN THE HELD MATERIAL. Internal inconsistency: the text (PDF p.3) says albumin and calcium "were significantly lower in the exposed animals", but Table 1 (PDF p.3, read at render) shows exposed higher (albumin 3.9 +/- .05 against 3.7 +/- 0.1 g/dl; calcium 14.1 +/- 0.2 against 13.5 +/- 0.3 mg/dl). This record does not resolve the direction. The lymphocyte test was 30 days after exposure ended (PDF p.6). The whole-body SAR is calculated, not measured. The A/G ratio change at 30 days (3.80 against 2.20, P 0.028, Table 4, PDF p.4) is called of questionable importance by the authors. Exposure density: 10 mW/cm2 = 100 W/m2 at the head, 0.43 of 230 W/m2. Animal data only.
What it assumes
No assumptions are recorded against this claim.
Where it comes from
PDF p.2: 23 h/day for 180 consecutive days; 7 mW/cm2 at body axis, 10 at head, 14.5 at cage top; peak head SAR 17 W/kg "as determined by thermographic techniques"; maximum whole-body average 1.5 W/kg from prolate-spheroid calculations (paraphrase). PDF p.3: three of 41 parameters differed, "close to the number expected by chance" (0.05 x 41 = 2.05). PDF p.5: myeloid/erythroid 1.21 +/- 0.11 control against 1.82 +/- 0.09 exposed (paraphrase); no lesions "observed that could be attributed to microwave irradiation". PDF p.1: exposed lymphocytes showed "a significant suppression in responsiveness to" pokeweed mitogen. PDF p.7: "the results are not meant to be" definitive.
Basis: mW/cm2 incident; W/kg SAR (peak measured, whole-body calculated); 23 h/day x 180 days
