Low confidence

The evidence behind this statement is thin, indirect or second-hand. Read it as a lead to check, not as a settled finding.

In plain terms

Hamsters kept in a field from under half to slightly above the 1978 beam-centre level for most of each day showed small brain-cell changes under the microscope in some animals. The author thought the changes would reverse but did not test that.

The claim as recorded

Chinese hamsters exposed to 2450 MHz CW at 10 and 25 mW/cm2 (100 and 250 W/m2) for 14 hours a day showed, in some exposed animals, fewer dendritic spines, axonal swelling and beading, hyperchromatic neurons and neuronal cytoplasmic swelling. There was no gliosis, haemorrhage or pyknosis, and the effects appeared somewhat greater at 25 mW/cm2. The investigator judged the changes probably reversible, while stating that no recovery study was done. Animals at 25 mW/cm2 were more irritable in the first 7-14 days.

Evidence behind this: T3-a symposium abstract and summary, authors redacted; qualitative histology only.

Scope and limits

ABSTRACT ONLY: NO COUNTS, NO STATISTICS, NO DOSIMETRY (SAR), "SOME" ANIMALS UNQUANTIFIED. The abstract (PDF p.1: adults, 20 days) and the summary (PDF p.2: 21-day-old females, 10 weeks) describe different durations and ages; this record does not resolve which applies to the reported findings. "25 MW/cm2" on PDF p.2 is read as mW/cm2: the title and PDF p.1 give mW, so it is treated as a typing error, not a 1000x difference. 12 animals were exposed at a time in a shared frame with daily rotation (PDF p.2), so individual dose is uncertain. Animal data only; no human inference is drawn here.

What it assumes

No assumptions are recorded against this claim.

Where it comes from

SRC-663 Evidence of Neuropathology in Chronically Irradiated Hamsters by 2450 MHz Microwaves at 10...
PDF p.1: exposure "14 hours/day for 20 days"; exposed brains had "fewer dendritic spines", axonal swelling and beading, hyperchromatic neurons and cytoplasmic swelling (paraphrase); "There was no evidence of gliosis" (also no haemorrhage or pyknosis, paraphrase); the changes "are probably reversible", with no recovery studies performed (paraphrase). PDF p.2: "Twenty-one day old female Chinese hamsters" exposed at 10 and 25 MW/cm2 (sic; mW), 14 hours/ "day for 10 weeks". PDF p.3: Nauta and Fink-Heimer findings; fewer cortical dendritic spines on Golgi-Cox (paraphrase).

Basis: mW/cm2 incident CW; hours per day; days or weeks
