Low confidence
The evidence behind this statement is thin, indirect or second-hand. Read it as a lead to check, not as a settled finding.
In plain terms
Wiring a chicken's muscles showed the beam made one side tense and the other go slack within moments, and the bird was back to normal seconds after it was switched off.
The claim as recorded
A 1969 conference paper from the National Research Council of Canada and Queen's University reports electromyography of a Leghorn chicken in an absorber-lined cage under 9.29 GHz pulsed microwaves (416 pulses per second, 2.35 microsecond pulses) at 100 mW/cm2 on the antenna axis. At onset, muscles on the side nearer the field became more active and the opposite side's activity fell almost to complete paralysis, most clearly in the sartorius and deltoideus minor; after switch-off the bird recovered its posture within a few seconds and muscle activity returned to normal. The paper also gives times to the terminal state at 45 mW/cm2 and 16 GHz of 4 to 10 seconds for chickens, 20 to 60 for pigeons and 10 to 120 for gulls, longer at 9.29 GHz. It states the mechanism is not known.
Evidence behind this: T5, a conference paper with no stated review; one bird in the measured test, no traces shown. It permits "the 1969 conference paper reports Y" only.
Scope and limits
One bird; exposure duration of the EMG test not stated; no traces or quantities given. 100 mW/cm2 pulsed X band, four times the proposed beam-centre level in CLM-0080 (ours: 100/25). The species times are a summary of the Nature letters' work without numbers of birds. The proceedings title is handwritten on the copy, not printed.
What it assumes
No assumptions are recorded against this claim.
Where it comes from
, PDF p.1: "a field intensity of 100 mW/cm2 at 9.29 GHz (416 pps) pulsed width 2.35 usec on the axis of the antenna"; "a decrease in activity of the contralateral muscles almost to complete paralysis"; "On switching off the field the chicken recovered its normal posture after a few seconds"; at 45 mW/cm2 for 16 GHz "chickens (Old English Game) 4-10 secs, pigeons 20-60 secs, seagulls (Ringbill) 10-120 secs".
