In plain terms
In 2002 a metre-wide rectenna moved along an exhibition floor in Houston, tracked by a self-steering 5.8 GHz beam, converting 82 per cent of what hit it to DC in front of ten thousand people.
The claim as recorded
At the 2002 World Space Congress in Houston a SERT-sponsored public demonstration by Texas A&M and NASA Johnson "illuminated a 1-m rectenna array with a circularly polarized (CP) beam at 5.8 GHz, demonstrating 82% RF-to-DC conversion efficiency", from a transmitter with "retrodirective control so that the beam could track the rectenna array as it manuevered along the exhibition floor", before "more than 10,000 members of the public".
Evidence behind this: T2-review restatement of Strassner and Chang 2003 [88] (IEEE T-MTT, not held) and the transmitter paper [89]; the [88] first author's surname and initial match one of the review's authors; identity not verified beyond that match.
Scope and limits
NO POWER LEVEL, DISTANCE OR INCIDENT DENSITY; the photograph was taken "at reduced power". The 82 per cent is the array's RF-to-DC at whatever density the demonstration used, from a paper titled for "low power density" applications ([88], PDF 27, layer). Primary not held; the [88] first author's surname and initial match one of the review's authors, identity not verified beyond that.
What it assumes
No assumptions are recorded against this claim.
Where it comes from
PDF 9 / printed 237: "In 2002, a SERT-sponsored public demonstration at the World Space Congress in Houston, TX illuminated a 1-m rectenna array with a circularly polarized (CP) beam at 5.8 GHz, demonstrating 82% RF-to-DC conversion efficiency [88]" (read at the render; the text layer drops the line-end hyphen of 1-m); "The transmitter [89] featured retrodirective control so that the beam could track the rectenna array as it manuevered along the exhibition floor" (R1; "manuevered" is the page's spelling); "This joint demonstration of Texas A&M University and NASA Johnson Space Center was witnessed by media, international officials, and more than 10,000 members of the public" (R2); Fig. 15 caption "World Space Congress CP demonstration, at reduced power to accommodate photography" (normalised).
