In plain terms
The price the UK government agrees to pay onshore wind farms, per unit of electricity actually generated, roughly halved from 2015 to 2022, then rose again through 2024 and 2026. These are real, dated contract prices from competitive auctions, not projections, but they are for electricity as generated, not guaranteed firm delivery.
The claim as recorded
UK onshore wind (>5MW) CfD strike prices fell from GBP 79.23-82.50/MWh (2012 prices, AR1, 2015) to GBP 42.47/MWh (AR4, 2022), then rose to GBP 50.90-52.29/MWh (AR5/AR6, 2023-24) and GBP 51.85/MWh in 2012 prices, equivalent to GBP 72.24/MWh in 2024 prices (AR7a, 2026); onshore wind was not an eligible technology in AR2 or AR3.
Scope and limits
UNFIRMED generation price - paid only for electricity actually produced, no obligation or payment for dispatchable delivery. Cannot be used as evidence for the cost of firm or storage-backed wind power. Onshore wind and solar were excluded from AR2 and AR3 by policy design (technology-pot restrictions at the time), so the absence of a price in those two rounds is not itself a market signal.
What it assumes
Subsidised (CfD top-up over wholesale reference price, not a market price); strike prices in 2012 prices (AR1/AR4/AR5/AR6), dual-quoted 2012/2024 prices in AR7a; delivery years 2016/17 (AR1) through 2028/29 (AR7a); contract length per CfD standard terms (not separately verified).
Where it comes from
AR1 Dorenell/Kype Muir/Clocaenog 82.50, Brenig/Mynydd Y Gwair 79.23-79.99; AR4 Cumberhead West/Arecleoch/Kilgallioch/Stranoch/North Kyle etc. 42.47; AR5 Strathy South/Clash Gour/Limekiln etc. 52.29; AR6 Benbrack/Crystal Rig IV/Corriegarth etc. 50.90; AR7a onshore wind 51.85 (2012 prices)/72.24 (2024 prices).
Basis: GBP2012 (dual-quoted alongside GBP2024 in AR7a), NOMINAL contract/REAL basis-year convention, UNFIRMED
